What Do You Want For Your Birthday - Infertility Style

It's my birthday in a couple of weeks... Or it might have already passed, if you go by my mother-in-law's calendar which has aged me prematurely by twenty days or so. Milestones are hard for those undergoing infertility, or at least for me. Any occasion which marks the passage of time is a painful reminder that the years go by, but my inability to conceive remains the same. I used to enjoy celebrating birthdays with friends, whereas now I start to dread them months in advance.

I even had a birthday party with FIREFIGHTERS once. Yes, I used to be fun...

Around this time, I start to get questions like, "What do you want for your birthday?" I've always found it hard to give out wish lists as an adult, but now I find it particularly difficult? What do I want? I want to be a mother. I want nothing more than to be a mother. I want to wake up and not feel an overwhelming sense of sadness. I want to feel hopeful again. I want to go back to when I read "If God is for us, who can be against us?" and to believe it in full, instead of seeing the see of baby bumps around me on Facebook, at the church, on the bus, and feeling like God is certainly not for me these days.

But then I read the news. I see the thousands upon thousands of people clamoring for help, for a safe place to raise their children, for a roof over their heads and an escape from the perils of war. And then I feel like a real jerk for focusing on my dark little cloud when other people are in the midst of an unimaginable storm. I guess what I want for my birthday is for a better world, and to be a better person, to find that light within and pass it on to others.**

I know this post may feel disjointed. Please bear with me as I wrestle with various emotions right now. Thank you. <3

32 (Sigh...): A Post in Which I Get Real

--> Disclaimer: Parts of this post are new, and other parts I have written and re-written many times over the past few months. If this piece comes out as disjointed as a result, I do apologize and welcome your input!

I had a birthday this week, and am now 32 years old. Sigh... It was a good day of relaxing, going for a run in beautiful weather, doing errands, and a surprise dinner with my husband. (I thought we would have to postpone as he is on-call this week.) He also gave me a Kindle, so I am in the process of downloading lots of books (mostly free!) from my reading list, and also of eating my words, as I have been known to proclaim loudly that I would *never* give up physical books. :-)

I had mixed feelings looking forward to this birthday. It was exciting as it would be my first birthday as a married lady, hopefully the first of many. I imagined the joy of Gil being the first person I would see on my birthday, and looked forward to that morning. On the other hand, my feelings are mixed as I find myself deeper into my thirties every year raises the pressure I feel to start a family ASAP.

When I was young, as any young child, I did not understand why adults would be upset about their birthdays. What's not to like about having your own special day? Now I kind of understand that frustration. It feels like I am constantly being bombarded with reminders of declining fertility in the thirties. It's on the news, it's in my inbox (usually from news sites), and it's in conversations with other women around my age. My mom has been hinting for a while now that she'd like a grand-child, and mother-in-law asked us right after our honeymoon when we would have a baby! Even my brother-in-law recently asked Gil when we going to give their mom a grandson. (Seriously? Is Downton Abbey and we need a male heir?) Talk about pressure!

The thing is, I don't think any of this pushing is helpful. There are lots of great reasons to have a child, but “got tired of my mom's nagging” and “all my friends were doing it” are not among them. Honestly, when I read another scary article or undergo an interrogation, it doesn't make me trust God more. Instead, I feel as though I need to get on it and have a baby while I'm still young enough for God to bless me. That's not the heart of the God who gave Isaac to Sarah, and Samuel to Hannah. I'm not saying it is wise to postpone childbearing and expect a miracle, but I am saying that we need to be careful not to use biology to put God in a box. It makes me sad that some people are not giving us the freedom to enjoy these first months of marriage without the pressure of starting a family right away (let alone the freedom to make our own decisions). I know friends who have started families young, and many of them took a lot of flack for being young parents, but I do believe that those of us who marry older also bear some stigma as well. Can't people just mind their own business sometimes? Not only that, but we all need to mind our words and make sure we are not being insensitive. We never know all the details of another person's life and struggles.

I just want to clarify: I have no issues with discussing these things when I'm with close friends. If you are my friend (AKA you know my last name, we have had conversations in places other than the church lobby, etc.) PLEASE don't be afraid to ask me about my hopes and plans. In fact, I love talking about pregnancy and babies, as it helps me get read for if/when it finally happens. I don't mind casual joking about having a baby if I know it comes from someone who genuinely cares about me and not just my ovaries. I just don't need the constant reminders that I'm getting older.

Okay, end of rant. :-) Thanks for reading and letting me be vulnerable.

Ah, the days when birthdays were angst-free... and bowl haircuts were all the rage.

PS While am not endorsing this movie in its entirety, any discussion of the unhelpful things people say to unmarried/childless women is best illustrated by this clip.  Seriously makes me laugh every time.

Birthday FAIL!

Well, yesterday I tried to take my husband out for a late birthday celebration.  Gil loves to watch sports, so I bought tickets to our local OHL team (Mississauga St Mike's Majors), which I thought he would enjoy.  Actually, when we were first dating, we went to a lot of Ottawa 67s games, so I thought it would kind of remind us of our early days.

The view from our seats, right behind the scorekeeper

Unfortunately, however, it seemed nothing about our birthday celebration went as planned.  I got the address wrong, so we wandered around central Mississauga for several minutes before realizing that we were in the wrong spot.  By the time we made it to the game, we had missed most of the first period.  We did have great seats though, so we enjoyed the rest of the game.

Following the game, we thought of going to a pub to watch the NHL All Star Game (yes, it was a hockey-themed birthday), but Gil thought it would be better to go to my mom's house and watch it on her big flat-screen TV.  So, we went there, but she was out, and for some reason we could not get the screen door open.  It was either locked from the inside or jammed.  I don't have the key for the other door, and we couldn't find the hiding space for the spare key.  We couldn't reach her cell phone, so after a few minutes standing around outside, we quit and went for sushi instead.

I felt pretty bad about everything going wrong for Gil's birthday celebration.  (Perhaps I should have recognized the ominous signs when baking his cake went so terribly wrong!)  I'm blessed with a very understanding husband who didn't complain at all.  In fact, he didn't really care whether we went out for his birthday at all.  At least we will hopefully have many more birthdays together and can look back and laugh at this one in the future.  :-)

In other news, last week, I got my Visa and SIN cards with my new name, so I am on the way to becoming Mrs. T!

Happy birthday Gil!

Happy birthday Gil!

It was special to have this first "married birthday", to get to see each other first thing in the morning and at night too. We didn't do much, as he is on call and working like crazy, so I just made pound cake (shattering a glass jar of flour in the process). Now I am sick with a nasty flu, so I think the real celebrating will have to come later on.

In other news, we finally got our marriage certificate in the mail, so yesterday I was able to officially assume Gil's name for my driver's licence! It was a bit strange to sign the papers with my new name, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
